Make your sliding patio door glide again

A patio door that grinds, lifts off its track or won't lock is usually telling you about one worn part. Rollers, the track, a latch or a handle can each be fixed on their own, and one roller is a real job. We connect you with an independent local pro who repairs sliders. If the frame is past saving, they'll say so.

Troubleshooting

Why sliders stop sliding: worn rollers, bent or dirty track, sagging panel

Start with what the door is doing. If it's the screen jumping the track, not the glass panel, see screen door repair.

Won't slide, or grinds as it moves

Flattened or seized rollers, or a track packed with grit. Cleaning buys time; worn rollers need replacing.

Comes off the track or lifts out

A bent track lip, a dropped roller, or a panel set back unevenly. Don't force it; a loose panel is heavy and can fall.

Won't close all the way

Worn rollers let the panel sink and meet the jamb at an angle. Daylight down the latch side is the giveaway.

Won't lock or latch

The panel has dropped so the hook misses its keeper, or the lock has worn out.

The repair

Roller and track repair, step by step

Here's what the pro we match you with usually does.

  1. Lift the panel out

The moving panel comes off the track, and the pro checks the rollers, bottom rail and frame corners.

  2. Clean and true the track

Grit comes out, and a bent lip is straightened or capped.

  3. Fit matching rollers

Rollers differ by door, so the old ones are matched by size and housing.

  4. Adjust and test

The rollers are set so the panel runs level and the latch meets its keeper.

Handles and locks

Handles, locks and security bars

On a ground-floor rental, a slider that won't lock matters. It's usually alignment.

Worn lock or handle

The pro matches the hole spacing so a new set fits the existing cut-outs.

Security bar or foot lock

A track bar or foot lock adds a second stop on rental sliders.

Past repair

When the frame is too far gone

Rollers are the small end of a patio door; the frame is not. A pro will suggest a new door when the sill is cracked or soft and letting water in, or the frame has twisted so the panels won't meet.

Then read patio door replacement. For front, storm and screen doors, the doors and screens overview sorts problems by symptom.

What affects the quote

What shapes the price of a patio door repair

The pro weighs:

  • Which part: rollers, a track cap, a latch or a handle set
  • Whether parts are stock or have to be matched for an older door
  • Panel size and weight
  • Track condition, and access such as an upper-floor balcony
  • Any glass work, which is quoted separately

Five seconds of video of the door sliding tells a pro most of what they need.

Glass in the door

Fogged or cracked glass in a patio door

Fog between the panes means the sealed unit's seal has failed, even if the door slides perfectly. A crack is a glass job too. Either way, the glass can usually be replaced while the frame stays. Ontario's building code calls for tempered or laminated safety glass in sliding doors (OBC 9.6.1.4), and each unit is made to size. Fog that wipes off the room side is condensation; the foggy window page explains.

Condos and rentals

Balcony sliders in condos and apartments

Plenty of Durham sliders open onto a balcony; Pickering has the region's highest share of condos.

Before replacing a balcony door or its glass, check who looks after it: condo owners, the declaration and property manager; tenants, the landlord. Oshawa's same-size permit exemption covers houses only, so check with the City. Property managers can send several doors as one request.
