Screen and storm doors · Oshawa
Screen doors that slide, latch and keep bugs out
A patio screen that jumps its track, a storm door that slams because the closer gave out: small jobs, worth doing properly. Most screen doors are put right with new rollers, mesh or a closer. We connect you with a local pro who takes on screen and storm door work, and they'll tell you which yours needs.
- Rollers, mesh and closers fixed
- Storm doors on older homes
- Retractable screens for wide openings

Patio screens
Sliding patio screen doors: rollers, frames and mesh
A patio screen is a light frame on small rollers. If it's the glass panel that drags, see sliding door repair.
Falls off or jumps the track
Worn or dropped rollers, or a frame bent from being pushed at one corner. New rollers set to the right tension usually hold it.
Drags or sticks
Grit in the track, a flat roller or a bowed frame.
Torn mesh or a loose spline
New mesh goes into the same frame, as with window screens.
Won't latch
The frame sags and the latch misses. Adjusting rollers or a new latch sorts it.
Storm doors
Storm and screen combination doors
With Durham's oldest housing, Oshawa has plenty of aluminum storm doors: glass for winter, screen for summer. The City counts storm and screen units among what a home keeps weather-tight and in good repair.
Closer and chain
They stop the door slamming or catching the wind, and are replaced on their own.
Handle, latch and hinges
Most swap for a matching set; loose hinges are refixed.
Screen inserts and springs
Panels are rescreened; roll-up screens can get a new spring or screen.
Glass panels
A cracked pane gets safety glass; see door glass.
Wide openings
Retractable and magnetic screens for wide openings
For wide openings and hinged garden doors, a sliding screen isn't the only option.
Retractable screens
Mesh rolls into a side housing and pulls across when wanted. Good where a sliding screen can't run.
Magnetic screens
A split curtain that closes with magnets. Hands-free, but less sturdy.
Framed sliding screens
The sturdiest where a slider has a screen track. A bent one is replaced to size; see custom screens.
Repair or replace
Repair versus replace a screen door
Fix the part when the frame is straight; one roller or closer is worth asking about. Replace when the frame is kinked, cracked at the corners or corroded, or an old storm door's parts can't be found.
A new storm door hangs on the entry frame, so check the front door behind it too. The doors and screens overview covers other door problems.
What affects the quote
What affects the price of a screen door repair
The quote rests on:
- Patio screen, storm door or retractable system
- Which part, or the whole frame
- Width and height
- Mesh choice, including pet-resistant mesh
- Whether parts are stock or have to be matched for an older door
Send the width, height and a photo of the broken part.

Pet-resistant options
A screen door takes the worst of a dog that wants out. Pet-resistant mesh is heavier and coated, and holds up to claws far better than standard fibreglass, with a slightly darker view. A push bar or grille across the lower half keeps paws off it.
A small pet door can go into a new or rescreened panel; mention it when you ask.
